“The mark of a true writer is their ability to mystify the familiar and familiarize the strange.“ – Walt Whitman. This course explores the foundations of worldbuilding, primarily in SF and fantasy literature. Through case studies, activities, and literary/film analysis, we explore the meaning of stories and the value in creating worlds for these stories to exist. Developing students’ skills as literature scholars, storytellers, writers, critics and communicators, this course mostly consists of seminars and mini-workshops. The course grade will be based on active participation and a final project, in which the student chooses one of the mini-workshop projects to expand and share with the class.
