This course is a deep dive into the world of William Shakespeare’s Macbeth. In this course we do not concern ourselves with the nature of the iambic pentameter, nor do we attempt to decipher Shakespeare’s magical, yet confusing language. Instead, we place ourselves in the shoes of the characters and ask ourselves – what would I have done in this situation? In this course, students embody a character from Macbeth and react to gamified role-playing scenarios inspired by the play (think: Dungeons & Dragons, but Shakespeare). Supplementary activities and mini lessons will explore the historical context, notable productions and adaptations of the play. Toil & Trouble: a Macbeth Adventure is a course for students interested in theater and performance, history, tabletop role-playing games, and for those who want to explore Shakespeare in a nontraditional classroom context.
The gamified reactive role-play format used in this class is inspired by the Reacting to the Past series by Mark C Carnes, Barnard College.
